In looking back over the 1901 Crossmolina census, the heading for the column we assumed was the house address is titled, "Fam#Names." We assumed it was the address on Erris St., but did the "family" have some other numerical designation other than street address?

The address 32 Erris St. appeared on the 1901 Crossmolina census, so apparently houses were numbered at one time. Although they may not presently be numbered, can the specific building where my father was born be identified based on past numbering? It appears that all addresses (house number and street name) were given on that census.

My mothers family came from Ireland. I am looking for Anna Walsh from Rake Street, Crossmolina who immigrated to the usa in 1846. Parents are Martin Walsh and Mary Gallagher. In the USA she married Patrick O'Hara from Megonaugh/Moygawnauh Parish in County Mayo also. His parents are Charles O'Hara and Margaret (Mary) Coleman.

Webmaster. I have a two pronged request – my dad was born at 32 Erris St. in Crossmolina. Could a close up picture of this building at 32 Erris St. as it is now, be made available to me on a link? Many of the photos on the Photo Gallery are close up shots of buildings so it should be no problem. It would be of great sentimental interest to me to see the very site, and perhaps even the original building, in which my dad was born. Secondly, is a picture of 32 Erris St. looking down from Main St. taken between the years of 1900-1905 available, when my dad, his siblings and parents, Pat and Winifred Fleming, lived there? A picture of the building at 32 Erris St. between 1900 and 1905 would really please me. If you can secure it, can you also put that on a link? Thanks and the Merriest of Christmas’s to all in my ancestral hometown of Crossmolina.

Webmaster. Thank you for the photo of Erris St. We will check the Crossmolina Chronicle for pictures and info on past residents. Looks like it might be an interesting project. We truly enjoy this site, reading exchanges between residents, former residents and "wannabe" residents. There is something for everyone. We also enjoy the pictures in the photo gallery, and look forward to seeing new ones in the future. Might be fun to see an occasional resident on them. Keep up the fantastic work.

I enjoyed looking at the pictures of Crossmolina, they were great. But why on earth are there no people in them? I don't mean that I want to see posed pictures, but despite the cars it looks like a ghost town. I can't imagine saying to my friends "Look, here are some pictures of my hometown. Isn't it lovely? Very peaceful. There's never a sinner on the street." Surely you could have rustled up some people, going about their daily business?

Hello Erris man. A Relieving Officer according to “archaic occupations” is an official who took charge of poor or insane persons not otherwise cared for. Apparently this was the occupation of my great uncle and one of his sons. My grandfather and his family (including my father, who was one year old at the time) lived at 32 Erris St. at the turn of the century. My great uncle and his family lived at 23 Erris St. I have no idea who currently resides at either of these addresses. I copied the pictures of Crossmolina on the Photo Gallery and would like a photo of Erris St. looking toward the two above addresses if anyone has one available. If anyone has one available, please contact me at my email address. My father was born in Crossmolina, and apparently the family’s presence in Crossmolina goes back several generations before him. My father died when I was very young, and I am interested in learning all I can about him and his predecessors. I thank the kind people of Crossmolina for their input and information. God bless you all.

I have recently determined that my grandfather, Patrick Fleming, was a victualler in 1900. His address is listed as '32 Erris Street.' Can anyone tell me if this street still exists and where it is in Crossmolina in relation to Main St. downtown? Is a city map showing every Crossmolina St. available? Also, My grandfather's brother, Thomas Fleming, had his address listed as 23 Erris St., and his occupation was 'relieving.' Can anyone tell me what the occupation of 'relieving' is?

Hello Pat. well Congrats on getting bush back and it looks like he might be in for a change as have his first term party team is leaving, which i thnk is for the better. But i also drive through the lincoln tunnel everyday and never worry about is it going to break in two or blow up cause if i did i would then be so afraid i would not be allowing myself to live and thats worse than thinking there will be another Sept 11.If something bad happens again to the USA,God help the rest of the world as even Ireland will be Affected by the wrath the USA will unfold, and you can say hello to WW3.o i dont think the bad guys and i am not just pointing out the terrorists cause Ireland would be included in that catagory, Would be that stupid to cause the end of life as we know it and their beliefs and their people. So Pat dont live like the americans and live like an irish man and drink and be merry as tomorrow might never come. And to rid terrorism all around the world(including the irish ones and the american Hipocrites who send money and organise parades and festivals to support the irish ones,,,you know who i am talking about.) well Pat take care and talk soon

,Thank you Dympna. Like I have said many times in the past,.
this is a great website and congrats to the webmaster, however most visitors treat it as if it were a chat room whrere everybody is undercover or running or hiding from somebody. I am sure that when the webmaster designed this he had something else in mind.
This is a great tool, especially for emigrants who have left Crossmolina many years ago and would like to communicate with friends and relatives who may still reside in or around Crossmolina or are in some of the down under countries like Dympna,

I totally agree with the Deel Rovers Supporter, the only 'discusting performance' (dig at dissappointed on LI NY) on Sunday was the amounts of so called fans(?) that did not have the respect to stay till the end of the game.

Hard luck to the team, maybe next year ? Loads of respect to you all and Crossmolina can be particularly proud of the Cross lads performances.
Deel Rovers SupporteSigned on: 30/9/2004 13:17:11
Just like to say hard luck to all involved in the Mayo set-up, particularly the Cross Contingent.

Don't agree with the comments below re "the pub" and "disgraceful performance". These lads are after all amateur sportsmen who have given up months and years of their lives in the attempt to obtain glory for their county. The commitment and work they put into getting to Croker on All Ireland Final day was immense and unfortunately they are now being judged by some on one bad day at the office. There was no disgrace involved.

They do not deserve to be be subjected to smart comments about being in pubs or referred to disgraceful. They deserve and will continue you get support from the real supporters, such as those who waited and watched in Croker to the end of the game on Sunday. The disgrace on Sunday were the Mayo fans who turned their backs on the team that gave so much all year. It's not enough to only support on the good days.

Look at the pride they brought to the county all year. You only need to see the number of kids still wearing the Red & Green jerseys all week since the game. They gave us a great summer. Lets face it without these lads the main topic of conversation would have been the bad weather. Thanks to all involved for brightening up the summer

Hey Pat and Ray ya know you two might want to re-consider and unite after all your country is devided enogh!
....There's a dangerous growing Christian Fascist movement coming form the Republican party / US what ever happened to separation of church and state?
The family's in the middle east need to start preparing for the 2nd coming of Christ. I don't hold much hope for the USA.... a nation ruled by fear! (Nazi Germany existed out of fear and blindness) spending 90% of their free time watching TV, being told what to think 'HOW TO LIVE' and what to spend their income's on.. its sicking to watch it all!
like so many others in ireland I grew up on a diet of American TV filled with admiration for that once great country, I always hoped to move there but by fate I ended up in Australia and which I consider today.... a gift of the spiritual realm!!!

Marian doesn't discriminate between 086 and 087 as all users are equal through a virgins eyes, so both have been erected on her. Marian loves any erection which is for the greater good.

reading this web-site out here in Australia.... "a wonderful work in progress" seeing the beautiful old church surrounded with snow & the ESB power station (someone knows how to take a good picture!).
Mention was made of Mrs Leonard from the girls nationl school and memories came flooding back "Now what a gal she was" I was so blessed to have had her in my world for the whole of my childhood schooling and if anyone see's this and happens to bump into her pls let her know of my tribute!!

Just a message to you folks in relation to the two crossmolina websites and all the bitchin and moaning you guys are doing on this guestbook.

I just discovered this site on the web (I live outside Ireland, but I have close connections with the town and I have been going there 2-3 times per year since I was born) and I was so impressed with the content, pictures esp the lake and Neiphin etc etc. Then I go to the guestbook and what do I see.....something so amazingly Irish and small town. .. Some of you are so patheticly caught up with slagging off eachothers websites and then trying to post up your comments to try to gain some recognition on the internet. It's so childish.

I often wonder if those of you that do send up posts like this actually have anything better to do. One thing I definately know is that very few actually even appreciate the effort it actually takes to put up a website like this, and all you can do is slag the webmaster off in the guestbook.

I have just stumbled across this wonderful website about Mayo. My father was born in the Cosy Kitchen Pub 96 years ago and passed away in August last year. His sister Mary Lindsay and brother Tony Lindsay lived on the family farm at Mullinmore until they died. What has happened to that farm? Does anyone live there? I have some beautiful photos of my father and his father in their boat on Loch Conn. My father came to Australia when he was 19 years old and eventually bought a Sugar Cane plantation in North Queensland. The property is now owned by his 5 children. I have fond memories of my last visit to Crossmolina in 1993, when one of my father's closest friends Miko Hughes gave us a wonderful tour of Eddie Lindsay's favourite places. Good luck to you all. Brendan, well done on a brilliant service.

Pity you were dragged into the other debate, (not your fault in my opinion). I see you have a 4 doras rating. No small achievement and when I read back on past contributions, an awful lot of praise for your site. Keep up the good work.

Could I suggest you delete both yours and James comments on the subject to try to prevent this going on and on. Then maybe the guestbook might become what it was up to the last few weeks something that made lighthearted interesting reading.

There's enough fighting and acrimony around without what I would view as a community resource adding to it.Please note this is no criticism of you or your comments.

This is from one who thought crossmolina.4t to be interesting, amusing but unfortunately at times ott.

You might as well delete this while you're at it!!!!

Once again well done. The site has developed very well since it's inception and long may it continue.

Hi brendan,
why would anybody come to you and explain, you already no who it is via e-mail
also no names were given in that site about certain people giving brown envelopes they were blocked out,
The guestbook is your call but in my opinion i feel that our conversations are the real matters or we could get back real real maters about reillys profits going down because fergie is gone to scotland.
i would like to advise you to get a different job as due to the fact that when a person wants to talk about real matters on a crossmolina website about crossmolina we are told from the webmaster that we are unable to continue
well this is my final fairwell brendan i look forward to writing to you again when another act of so called wrong doing is done in the town again. "thats if we will be able to talk about it" as these are not real matters aparently james
Brendan MoylesSigned on: 27/4/2004 11:16:38
Hi james,
Look I have heard lots of names, but until that person comes to me and said that they were responsible I do not know who was responsible, so I did not Lie.

Also anyone who names people and associates them with brown envelopes etc. is bordering on slander.

You also state:
"informal conversation, often concerning people's PRIVATE affairs."

PRIVATE: (Just to let you know the Internet is a Public forum and easily accessible by many?)

This is the last of the matter and I will take down the Guest book if it continues to be abused. Get back to real issues that matter or issues of interest to people.

Dear Mr Moyles,
Will you kindly stop with the AKA first of all, my names is james and to answer your question about the e-mails the owner of crossmolina.4.com received I am a friend of the person in question who told me about it.
I am also well aware of the laws of the land and would like to advise you to stop spreading slander about the owner of crossmolina.4t.com as he did not have slander on the site
I would like to add that the site was called " crossmolina gossip " gossip in a dictionary is defined as "informal conversation, often concerning people's PRIVATE affairs."
I also will refuse to e-mail you personally as the people of crossmolina should know what the truth is. You also did'nt reply to my question on why you lied about not knowing who the owner was.
I look forward to your reply
james
P.S: we are all well aware that you liked the site and i agree we should move on but how can we when certain businesses in the town keep talking about it every time you enter their shops. one such business is beside the doctors. one in particular male in that business never shuts up about it and is spreading various names throughout the town.

Hi James, (AKA ?)
In reply to your comments, I liked the concept of the website, I had issue with some of the content and I advised the owner that they should be aware that they are publishing material which could be interpreted as slanderous. This leaves the owner open to prosecution See this text from the Irish Constitution.

“The State shall, in particular, by its laws protect as best it may from unjust attack and, in the case of injustice done, vindicate the life, person, good name, and property rights of every citizen.”

Also how would you know comments of emails sent to the owner of Crossmolina.4t.com?

I have enough to be doing without having to be following this, so my advice to you is if you want to set up a fun website, do so, but don’t publish personal comments about other people without stating your own name yourself.
Let the matter rest, and get back to work!!

Dearest Mr. Moyles,

I have just read your comment in the guest book, and I feel that I must express my shock that you openly lied.

Do you recall sending an e-mail/comment to the owner of Crossmolina.4t.com, in which you said something along the lines of, "We are not in competition with each other. This site is a good idea, but if you're going to slag our website, then please don't use pictures from our website"?

You and I both know who the real owner is; and I don't feel that other people's names, which are circulating the town at present, should be dragged into this controversy.

A few weeks ago, a certain name was mentioned quite a lot in your guest book, which you did not take off until it was mentioned in the Irish Independent. The same name was also mentioned on the Deel Rovers website - quite a lot, also.

Please do not erase this from your guest book, as I feel the public should get the chance to read it.

I look forward to hearing your reply.

Irish village seeks out anonymous trouble maker
Most of us are now aware of the power of the internet. Whether it's political activist Matt Drudge's drudgereport (which led the mainstream on the Clinton Monicagate story) or the bitchy genius that is media and music website popbitch.com, the web has thrown up a host of whistleblowers and malcontents ready to spread their splenetic rage over vast distances.
But watch your back drudgereport and popbitch, there's a new whistleblower in town.
The good burghers of Mayo town Crossmolina are currently abuzz with curiosity about the identity of the person behind the website Crossmolina.4t.com.
The site, which is easily one of the most eccentric things we have seen on the web in a long time (and we have seen some pretty interesting things), refers ominously to a prominent local resident as 'The Crossmolina Dictator' and lambasts the local bus company for the evil crime of parking their bus on the road.
Amid pictures of such famous local attractions as the proposed Centra grocery and snap shots of luminaries like Squeaky Peter, the message board is a hotbed of seditious thought.
"I had heard from one of the natives of your town how the people were ruled/terrorised by an evil tyrant (presumably this Doctor Guy)," posts one messenger. "He described him as a Montgomery Burns type figure... It's good to see we actually have a mercenary type figure who is willing to retaliate against this evil dictatorship - vive la revolution !!!!!"
Ah yes, a town whose previous claim to fame was that it was the wettest place in Ireland has certainly come up in the world. They'll be getting digital television next.

Hi All,
Just to dispel any rumours about the other infamous Crossmolina website. I had no part or do not know who was involved. To make false innuendos that certain individuals were involved is wrong.
In fact I welcomed its initial introduction as it offered a light hearted approach to many aspects of the town, that was until the content turned somewhat defamatory and ??????? was involved were also sending messages to Crossmolina.ie which could not be condoned or substantiated. This information has all been recorded for trace ability.

We all have great memories/opinions of Crossmolina and its many characters to start a list would be endless “Vinnie the fastest milkman in the west”, “Nights in the Town Hall”, “Spot the fiver competition” if any one would like to share pictures/stories/memoirs please contact me I would be delighted to accommodate. Crossmolina.ie is Crossmolina’s community online and I would be delighted if individuals want to disseminate their own personal contribution as I am sure it would make very interesting reading.

If anyone has contacted me by email over the last two weeks please do so again by clicking the email on the homepage and processing it through the form. This is due to the large amount of spam email circulating at the moment.

Thanks for your interest,
Is Mise,

I think it would be of great historical interest to all in your area to document and analyse all haunted houses and reports, confirmed or otherwise, of such cases. Does anyone know the new owners of the house as mentioned earlier so that maybe I could contact him directly to discuss further?

Great webite by the way, love keeping up with all the local Irish football and news in the area. It's still a better place than New York ~ nearly!!!!

I was shocked to hear about the fine new two storey house past the Protestant Church been haunted. When i used to go to Mayo my grandfather used to tell me about haunted houses near him. Are there any records of all the haunted houses in Crossmolina??

Lovely Site and great to see it updated regularly.
Well I have to say it’s been many years now since I was last in your town.
I used to meet the most wonderful girl at dances in Enniscrone and Pontoon and leave her home afterwards to Crossmolina. Those were the best of times and even though it was an 80 mile round trip to see her it was worth it - I truly hope she is having a happy life. I mostly called her by her surname which began with c.

is any body else as proud as i am when they watch this magnificant show. Living in the big city of galway is kinda hard for a country lad like myself and this programme reminds me of the good old days at home, carefree running round the fields naked, knee high in sh**e. I'm proud to be a redneck from the best town in mayo (between ballina and bangor erris). up the cross

I know it's a little unorthodoxed to be seeking medical advice here but after trying many of the current medical applications my personal problem sadly remains- I'm losing my hair. I have tried Regaine and several other similar products but with little or no success. I'm wondering if anyone has any old remedies which may work and help "cure me"?Thanks in advance

As always, your site is impressive. I was wondering if you could pass along a message to a fellow researcher, J.D. Hayes. I lost his e-mail address and I know he stops here occasionally. I've just acquired a wonderful new resource . If you read this, J.D., I just got my copy of Crossmolina's own Tony Donohoe's book. He is a national treasure and the book is outstanding!

Hello! I have a new grandson who has been given the name Kiernan Gill. I see on your website that you also have a Kiernan Gill living there who was an altar server at a December 21, 2001 mass. Would there be any way to pass along a message to this boy that he has a little buddy with the same name in California? I hope you can send love from here. My little Kiernan Gill has red hair, dark eyes and a very happy disposition. He's a big boy! God Bless and Happy New Year!

One always ran the risk of getting in Mrs Leonards black book down at the fence. I wonder how many names are in that black book?
SchoolSigned on: 29/5/2003 10:26:17
Anyone remember going down to the fence that separated the Boy's School from the Girl's school? Completely out of bounds but I think everyone went anyhow. Always good craic on Valentines Day handing over cards from classmates that fancied the Boys (Even better craic handing over a card from a girl who DID NOT fancy the recipient)
