Does a townland of Keenaghmore still exist? I'm doing a little guessing, but I think I found the marriage record of my ggrandparents, Patrick Gilroy of Tuoreenasmean and Patrick Hagerty of Keenaghmore, 1871. How about Tuoreenasmean?

Are there any stores in Crossmolina or nearby towns that sell DVD's or videos of Crossmolina sights and activities? I am interested in mail order businesses in the Crossmolian area that sell the above. I am also interested in mugs, sweatshirts, stationery or other items that have Crossmolina inscribed on them. Perhaps there is a local business that has a mail order catalogue of items for sale. If so, leave the particulars on the Crossmolina web site.

My grandmother just told me that her father, surnamed Molloy, came from Crossmolina. Her mother was born in a town, which I don't know how to spell, sounds like "Killday Mar." Does anyone know where that city is and its exact spelling? Someday I hope I can visit the country and cities of my heritage. Thanks.

Details of package I've signed up for the Clicksilver lite package is something similar to Imagine.

Cheers for the advice!

Just to clear up though, Imagine "always on" is €19.99 a month and Imagine "on demand" which only gives you 20 hours a month is €9.99 a month. Still think UTV is the better deal?

Brendan Signed on: 16/11/2005 12:12:59
Got connected today with UTV Internet, simple process. a little slower to get connected than eircom because of the transfer but well worth it. I have a 2 mb connection now.

Signed on: 16/11/2005 10:38:37
Ok that imagine broadband for 19.99 is the lowest package. You can only use 20 hours of broadband per month for that. If you get the UTV broadband you get it for 15.99 per month always on for the first 6 months and its 29.99 per month after that. Plus your phone bill will be with them and they give you free evening and weekend calls to all ireland and uk.....good or what!

Hi,

I am hoping to get broadband at christmas and just wanted to know what people's experiene of the current deals/providers was like?

I am considering getting the "Always On" package from Imagine....which is €19.99 a month.

Anyone have this and is it a good deal?

Cheers

I don't want to debate any service, let people choose, You don't need a big aerial to receive it. Something very similar to a tv aerial.

http://www.digiweb.ie/athome_broadband_wireless_how.asp?i=2&i2=5&i6=16

Thats all and hopefully everybody can receive fast internet service in the Crossmolina and surrounding areas.

Broadband Signed on: 8/11/2005 12:31:51
Who is going to want a huge aerial on their house picking up wireless internet. And then hassles of losing coverage and there wont be a connection when you need it most. Just get BT Broadband and your line rental works out at 10 euro then. Also if BT sees that your phone line is not up to scratch they have the power to make eircom fix it. If all else fails ring 'Comreg' and tell them eircom won't upgrade your line for broadband and they'll make them.

Richard Moyles Signed on: 8/11/2005 03:37:49
I have being in contact in Westnet to follow up on the progress with the group broadband scheme for the town.

They are currently rolling out their network in other areas of Mayo and Crossmolina could be made live in a matter of weeks if all goes according to their plan.

If you are having difficulties in getting broadband in Crossmolina or if you have a number of people in a particular area interested in getting broadband you can get details directly from Westnet by contacting:
1850 930 305

They should be able to offer a solution.

I am disgusted with the attitude of eircom. They have a monopoly on the lines. Charge us almost 25 euro a month to rent a line, the highest in Europe and have the cheek to tell us our line is only good for voice. We shoul revort!!!

Following numerous calls to eircom I have still failed to get Broadband installed. I was told that a lot of lines have failed and that if they fail it is 'Set in Stone' that we can't have broadband. They cannot guarantee our lines are suitable for data, only voice and cannot upgrade. Has anyone succeeded?

On the boy racers, well they will look after themselves, they will either grow up or end up on the highway to heaven, hopefully they wont bring some innocent with them, I suggest some of you get a cushion to put on the driver seats to ensure that you can be seen behind the wheel,,,,,,most of you look like small kids drivin your dads car,, and the cars look like the remote control models in toyshops.
Are there any expats reading or posting who went to Gortnorabbey in the 80s? I see Michael Finan has the same question re the Tech,,,
Anyone got information on what to do in Crossmolina now that the winter months are drawing in........ or are we restricted to mass, and bridge , like the crossmolina notes in the western let us believe,,,,, no news, just stuff like that.

Does anyone know how to contact Eircom directly, without going through the red tape and technology. I need to put pressure on them to unbundle the loop and give us broadband immeadiately. It is our right to have it. We are being discriminated against. The wireless option is a start, but we need the option of real competition th get real value for money, not to be ripped off as we are with phone line rental, one of the most expensive in Europe if not the most expensive.

I checked over westnets application, before it was submitted so I know the method that they are using to bring the service to the area. If DSL is available then that will be great, sometimes users need a better service or a alternative. When details are available at least you will have a choice.

Bank of Ireland to close in Crossmolina in November. Pass machine service at bank premises to be discontinued.

Time to act. In Foxford they managed to at least retain the Pass machine service on closure of the branch.

Hi, I have been trying to trace my family tree and have come to a dead end on the Irish side. The facts as I know them are as follows: My grandfather, Christopher Gallagher was born in Salford, Manchester in 1900. His father was Patrick Gallagher, born Swinford, some time (allegedly 17th March!) between 1856/1860. He married Mary Wignall in Garston, Liverpool in 1889. At the time of his marriage his father was listed as deceased labourer, John Gallagher. There is a possibility that Johns wife was called Bridget Conmee (but not sure of this). John may have had a brother named Joseph and a nephew named Martin (who at some point was living at the same address in Garston as Patrick). This is as far as I have got, after many years of searching. Can anybody, somebody, PLEASE help me? Does any of this sound familiar to you? Do you know somebody who might know? HEEEELLLLP MEEEEEEE!!
Thank you. Carol.

With reference to the last comment I'd like to direct the writer down the route of creating his own forum / message board, as he obviously feels the need to become an assistant censor, aiding the webmaster/administrator of this site. The main advantage of the internet (ignoring the disadvantages for the sake of this arguement) apart from the obvious benefits for research and reference is to aid the medium of communication. Sites like this are invaluable for small towns with regard to the excahnge of local news and events.Whereas this exchange of banal information may seem trivial and slightly irksome to you then that is an unfortunate consequence of everyday rural life in rural Ireland. Freedom of speech and thought is still a fundemental right for all - Rural Ireland doesn't fall within Mr. Bush's jurisdiction as yet thankfully. Therefore I'd suggest in future that your opinion is not the "correct" one as this is a purely subjective view and before classifying any post as childish but perhaps reminding yourself of these fundementals may benefit your understanding of how peopele outside "Junior's" realm accept differing opinions.

Crossmolina town was successful in its application with the Department of Communications for the Group Broadband Scheme.

This means that a Broadband network will be installed in the town. The project will be managed and run by Westnet.

The network will allow Internet users connect and download at much greater speeds than they currently are experiencing. It also means that you will not need a phone line to connect as the project is wireless.

Full details can be got from this Department press release.

http://www.dcmnr.gov.ie/Press+Releases/Minister+Noel+Dempsey+Announces+First+Stage+
Approval+for+Group+Broadband+Scheme.htm

If you are interested in registering for the service you can email me on rmoyles at gmail.com or
Telephone: 086 8178579

I don't have any association with Westnet, My only interest is in getting a high speed Internet connection in our area.

Patrick , I am just interested in exactly what type of posts you are unhappy with.

Surely as a community forum the site should be open for all to access so that it is representative of all, just as our community is made up of all kinds of 'special' one-off individuals.

On this site were you not previously an advocate of freedoms as propounded by the American administration. I have no difficulty with freedoms and feel that freedom of speech and expression should exist for all regardless of their level of mental ability.

Finally, I feel the phrase 'mentally impaired' is a demeaning phrase with many connotations which thankfully is beginning to be consigned to the dark ages.

If you look on the photo gallery you will see a picture of a tan/cream colored building with red and green mini flags strung together attached to the front of the building. The white building to the far left of it is the original Hopkins butcher shop. As to the age of the building, I am at a loss. I lived on Erris St for many years before moving to the US and as a kid bought lots-o-meat from Hopkins butcher! Hope this helps. By the way, the heat is brutal here in Philly!

I recently learned that Hopkins on Erris St. is the exact locale where my grandfather, Pat Fleming, had his business in 1905. Can the Web Master or some knowledgeable resident of Crossmolina tell me the approximate age of the current building? In other words, the Hopkins building as it is now, is it the same building as was there in 1905? I wish the Web Master could come up with a picture of the Hopkins Building on Erris St. depicting it in 1900 or 1905. Surely Crossmolina Town has pictures of Main Street business also, in the year 1900. Putting them on thephoto gallery would be of vast interest to descendents of past residents.

Hello to all in Philly, you are indeed correct, Hopkins butcher shop is now Daley Insurence as I first thought. Robert look at picture 6 in the photo gallery to get a better side view of the building, it is the first shop on the left with the red car outside it. The main home is almost directly across the road but further back on Erris St with a slaughter house at the back, but you can't see this in any of the pictures. I would suggest you contact the Crossmolina Heritage Centre to find out about the age of the building, they may have some records and of the Fleming family as well. Or you could try contacting Fa Hopkins (original name Frank Hopkins) who's family used to own the original building and still live in the main residence today.

Hello Crossmolina,

My mom was born back in Crossmolina on October 21st, 1931. She was a beloved mother of three who just passed away this morning at age 73 in Burbank, California. I visited Crossmolina once before and met a lady named Dorothy who showed me where she lived and where my grandparents are buried. I was grateful to meet Dorothy as my wife and I traveled through your beautiful town. My mom has been ill for a number of years and her strength kept her alive. She got this strength from Crossmolina. Her dad, my grandfather was a teacher back in Crossmolina and passed at a young age. Her sister, Imelda is currently living in England and her bother Basil died at a young age. I am looking forward to visiting your fine town next September and hopefully meeting other people who knew the Flannagan's. FYI - Mr. Garvin , I am Paul's friend back in California. When I come out I would love to meet you. I am going to the Ryder Cup in September.

Please say a Crossmolina Prayer for Olive Mary Flannagan.

Sincerely,

Patrick Lynch and Family

Mary, thank you for the information on Hopkins Butcher Shop at 32 Erris. St. This must be the site where my grandfather, Pat Fleming, had his business based on the 1901 census. Do you know if there is any authority or any records in Crossmolina that would tell me what this business was called in 1901? Perhaps it was Flemings before it became Hopkins? Again, thank you for the information. I am most appreciative. Robert

Crossmolina Addresses
I have recently determined that my grandfather, Patrick Fleming, was a victualler in 1900. His address is listed as '32 Erris Street.' Can anyone tell me if this street still exists and where it is in Crossmolina in relation to Main St. downtown? Is a city map showing every Crossmolina St. available? Also, My grandfather's brother, Thomas Fleming, had his address listed as 23 Erris St., and his occupation was 'relieving.' Can anyone tell me what the occupation of 'relieving' is?

I think you are talking about Hopkins butcher shop in Erris street they had a slaughter house too and family home across the road in the same street. if you look at the photos of Erris St you will see the butcher shop has now changed hands and is called Daley Insurance! Many's a time my mom would send me there for the lamb chops! Hope this helps.

Good to know that broadband will be coming to town, I don't really care who I connect with as long as it is fast, reliable and cheap. Wireless does mean that you dont have to pay the phone line rental charge which is handy. For a long time there was no service so anything will be better than none.

Paul Flaherty Signed on: 2/6/2005 07:22:24
Crossmolina will be enabled for dsl broadband by the end of june 2005.Dsl is actually a much more reliable form of broadband than wireless and less expensive. The actual number of telephone lines that fail for dsl is 18% and not 50% as claimed elsewhere. It is also untrue to make generic statements that wireless is faster-it depends on the product.Dsl can provide 4mbps.Eircom will connect customers free, provide a free modem, and give the 1st 2 months subscription free.

Broadband may come during the summer but if your phone line fails you don't get BB and there can be a 50% failure rate on phone lines. I am only interested in seeing the level of interest in a Wireless network, with wireless you don't need a phone line (so no line rental) and you get much faster connection speeds. If there is sufficient interest in an area then providers will come and operate the service. Also with a high capacity wireless network it is much easier attract new companies to Crossmolina.

By all accounts water pressure is bad in the Ballina Road area & Mullenmore areas and it has been for years and is getting worse. As for other areas, don't know.

Expect it will get worse when the new houses at Deerpark will be using water. Hard to understand how planning permission was given to build those without the new water scheme in place.

Probably people in those areas will have to go to Kitty's if they want a cup of tea. Hope parking is available.

For no really good reason, I haven't visited your site in several months. When I read the complaint about a Mr. Munnelly from "Size 8", my impression was that this site had really sunk to the lowest common denominator. I don't believe in censorship, but the original e-mail and the subsequent commentary were hardly what one would expect on a site that is by and large informative. Crudity and profanity are indicative only of a limited ability to express oneself . I wonder if "Size 8" is still at the University or has sought employment commenserate to her demonstrated level of intellectual attainment.

If you are interested in getting wireless Broadband in the town and surrounding areas. Then register your interest on this page http://www.crossmolina.ie/broadband.htm If we get enough names there is a Grant available to bring this service to our area.

To disgruntled and no-name from the usa. Give it a break. You've both had your say and it's been quite entertaining.

Hard to believe that the county council gave us the fine new car-park down the boreen and yet the crowds at Kitty's have caused such parking congestion leading to a roadside rage incident in our beautiful peaceloving town.

Maybe it's something to do with all those lovely double yellow lines the county council painted that I agree keep the traffic moving. It's a good job SIAC have moved out, sure for two years we couldn't park anyplace in town.

I had heard the motor tax paid to the county council on big cars was high and maybe this entitles merc drivers to designated parking places under the new parking bye-laws. But that being said this was really a case where a business transaction was being carried out and the availability of a loading bay should have been considered by the council to facilitate deliveries and collections at business premises.

In conclusion it appears to me that the council was probably on the face of it to blame for the whole sorry incident and this is a matter which you should at this stage refer to your local county councillor, TD or MEP. If things don't give rise to a peaceful resolution we could always call in the UN.

But if we do that George Bush will probably move in first without a UN resolution and God knows what sort of a mess that will leave!

Where this simple visit for fastfood might end, it's too frightening to think about I need a burger. Well it's off to Kitty's for me.

Where will I park????

Hi all,

I was wondering if there are any renuions planned for gortnor abbey or the girls national school (GNS)? I know there was a gortnor abbey one a few years back but I think it was more aimed at ex-pupils from decades ago, what about pupils from the last decade or so? I left both schools in the 90's and would love to meet/catch up with people I went to school with....especially GNS! Anyone know of anything in the pipeline?

Cheers

Happy New Year to you too Julie. The best bit about Cross recently is the arrival of the wheel. God, it's surprising how quickly we catch up with the rest of the world.

Imagine the day when we can fly like the birds!!!!!

Crossmolina needs a hotel and mini- mall that will create jobs, better serve residents and will economically energize the town. Doing so will also bring in moneyed tourists that will help Crossmolina prosper. Don't wait for progress; create the preconditions that will bring it to the fore.

The photo gallery is great. Are there any historical photos available going back to the turn of the century - late 1800's thru the early part of the 1900's? Residents, visitors and those with a historical interest in the town would find them interesting.
