THE MORNING DEW

Monday, (yesterday) was the first day of May and it is also regarded as the beginning of the summer season. May has always been dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is one of the truly delightful months of the year. Children are encouraged to place flowers before the statue of Our Lady in schools and in the home in her honour, continuing that lovely old custom.

Everywhere is fresh and full of promise. Young nettles are at their best and belief that they should be eaten three times during May to purify the blood after winder was widely practised once. Cooked like spinach they are made into soup. May Day should complete all the tilling of the soil and the turf cutting begins. Almost abandoned in some areas it is now seen as an important fuel and its popularity has again increased. The ‘pisreogs’ once associated with May Day are now of no interest to this generation which is no loss. The letting and grazing of meadows about now still continues however. ‘Summer is coming, oh summer is here, With the trees all so green and the sky bright and clear; And the birds they are singing their loved ones to woo, And the wild flowers are springing in the May morning dew”.
