On Sunday evening, July 23, a very special funeral Mass was celebrated in St Tiernan’s Church by Bishop Fleming for the remains of the children and one young adult which were archaeologically excavated in advance of the realignment of the N59 road at Carrowkeel. The unconsecrated graveyard at Carrowkeel was used to bury babies who had died before baptism. Such graveyards were common throughout Ireland from 1600 to early 1960. The grave at Carrowkeel were roughly marked using local stone, a minimum of 34 but possibly as many as sixty children were recovered from the site as well as one adult. Other archaeological finds from the site include pre-historic pottery and stone, tools, as well as bone pins, quern stone, iron tools, and glass beads. The very large attendance who attended the Mass with Bishop John Fleming and the priests who concelebrated Mass walked in procession after the hearse to St Tiernan’s Cemetery, where the remains were reinterred in the new section of the graveyard where a monument is to be erected by Mayo County Council.
