Severe flooding is reported in several parts of the country following torrential rain. Some roads are blocked by fallen trees and driving conditions are hazardous.
Some of the worst overnight flooding occurred in Crossmolina, north Mayo. Up to 20 houses in Crossmolina were flooded to a depth of two feet when the River Deel burst its banks early this morning. Three streets in the town are now underwater and emergency services at the scene say the situation is likely to deteriorate.

A large number of cars in the Chapel St and Church St area have also been flooded. A fire service spokesman said the situation was threatening to be as serious as the worst ever flooding Crossmolina experienced in 1989. AA Roadwatch has advised road users to exercise caution due to a severe weather warning.Motorists, especially drivers of heavy goods vehicles, should slow down, use dipped headlights and watch out for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

The heavy rain has caused flooding in many parts of the country including the Carrigrohane Rd in Cork, Claregalway in Co Galway and Circular and Bleach Rds in Kilkenny. Kerry and Waterford are also badly affected with many roads flooded and impassable.

Met Éireann warns of severe weather conditions

Met Éireann is advising people to take extra care as severe weather conditions are expected for the rest of the day.

Winds gusting up to 150km/h are forecast.

Storm force winds and heavy rain could lead to structural damage and flooding in places as the ground is already waterlogged.

Forecaster Gerald Byrne says the wet and windy conditions will ease later this evening.
