Family Names Many families now living in this North East corner of Mayo are descendants of the early Celtic settlers. Names such as Crean, Duggan, Flannery, Gaughan, Greahan, Lennon, Scanlon, Tiemey, Maughan, and O'Donoghoe, are the anglicized versions of early Celtic family names. The O'Morans were important chieftains and the family now called MacHale contributed many great men to the service of the church in later centuries. Some names have now disappeared altogether as O'Maoilfhiona who were chieftains in the Crossmolina area and from whom the town takes its name. The O'Murrays were chieftains in what is now Lacken. They were dispossessed by the Norman settlers during the thirteenth century. The O'Dowds were a powerful family both in Sligo and North East Mayo but after the Norman settlement they too were deprived of their lands west of the Moy. |
