Birthday Wishes

Congratulations to Dr Michael Loftus who celebrated his 80^th Birthday on the 9^th August. He is wished many more years of good health and happiness from his many  patients and friends throughout the parish

Crossmolina U21 team were defeated by Charlestown on Wednesday evening last  by two points 2 - 14 to 4 - 6. It was a contest which the hosts lead at one stage by fourteen points, the introduction of sub Robert Kelly who scored three goals  added much needed punch to the attack plus a much better performance all round. They now play Swinford in the next round.

ReHab Collection 

Many thanks to all who contributed to the Mayo ReHab collection taken up at churches in the parish on the weekend of August 15/16^th The total amount collected was €1,217.42. A special thanks to all the collectors  

Western Alzheimers Dance

The annual western Alzheimers fund raising dance which was held in Hiney’s Upper Deck was one of the most successful to date with over €7,000 raised. A special thanks to the organising committee: Kieran and Siobhain Gill, John and Monica Murtagh, Bernie McNamara, Kathleen Flynn, Mary Corcoran, Breda Mulkearns, Maureen Munnelly, Conor Staunton, Patricia McKinley, Pat Boyle. Thanks also to Kay and the Country Stars, Enda Hiney and staff, everybody who bought tickets, gave spot prizes, attended on the night or supported in any way.
The highlight of the night was the waltzing competition which attracted dancers from far and wide.
The winners were Paddy and Josephine Nallen Knockmore. In second place was John Meehan Glenfarn Leitrim and Mary Brady Fermanagh and third place went to Dan  O’Grady Collooney and Mary Flaherty Sligo

School re-opens

St Tiernan's College Crossmolina re-opens on Tuesday 1^st September for first year students and for all other students on Thursday 3^rd September. PLC students commence on Monday 7^th September.
Ollie Bolton retires after 36 years service, the last of which he spent as principal. Ollie is replaced by Conor O’Reilly, a native of Castlebar, he commences his duties on 1^st September. We wish both of them well.

Crossmolina Tigers Girls Basketball Club resumes on Thursday September 10^th

Ladies Basketball will resume on Tuesday 8^th September at 8pm in the Crossmolina G A A centre.

Old Mobile Phones

The Jack and Jill foundation in conjunction in Promethean will give an interactive white board to Crossmolina N.S. when they collect 300 mobile phones/handsets. If you have an old mobile phone please drop it in to the school now that it is open or to Kevin Loftus Drapers who will take them in for the School

Paddy Joe Loftus R I P

The death occurred on Thursday 27^th August at his residence of Paddy Joe Loftus Creevy Castlehill Ballina. His remains were removed from Hiney’s funeral home to the Church of Our Lady Kilmurray. Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery after requiem mass. Paddy Joe was pre deceased by his sisters Mary and Bernadette and brother Willie. He is survived by his wife Margaret, sons Joseph Louth, Michael Creevy, daughter Collette Deerpark Crossmolina, daughter - in - law Sarah, grandsons, brother Fr Kevin Easkey, sisters Phil Clarke and Elizbeth McGovern Chicago Imelda McGuire Enniscrone, inlaws, nieces, nephews, relations, friends and neighbours. May he Rest In Peace.

Community Games News

There was no medal for Cian O’Boyle Ballina Rd or Emma Loftus in the All Ireland community games in Athlone last week. Both advanced to the Semi-Final which was very creditable for U10 years, considering there was talent there from all over Ireland

Cathal and Ollie have retired

Cathal Prior (38 years) and Ollie Bolton (36 years) have both retired from the teaching staff of St Tiernan's College Crossmolina. They will be sorely missed by the staff and pupils as they were very courteous and helpful to everybody. They are wished all the best in their retirement, may they enjoy good health and enjoyment  from now on - they deserve it !

Golf Outing

John McAndrew Honoured

John McAndrew the Bangor native who played on the first Crossmolina team that won the County Senior title in 1949 and who was honoured by the club in 1999 on the 50^th anniversary of that title. John went on to win two All-Ireland senior medals with Mayo in 1950 and '51 and National League in 1954. The Mayo Emigrant liaison committee is to honour a number of people as part of the 10^th Anniversary, celebrating the Irish diaspora and honouring those who made a significant contribution while living abroad. Dr John is one such person, the presentation will take place in the Welcome Inn Hotel Castlebar on Friday night September 11^th with the Legendary Kerry footballer Mick O’Connell to make the presentations

abaca photography studio, owned by Ciaran Duignan opened in Crossmolina in July this year. The bright, modern shop front is a very welcome feature as it adds a new dimension to the well established shops in Main Street.

Crossmolina Business Association wish to thank all who donated so generously to the Christmas lights fund at the Traders Race, 725euro was realised.

CONGRATULATIONS

Crossmolina Community Council wish to congratulate the Festival Committee on a very successful week of activities in our community. 

It was great to see some of our community groups taking part in the festival activities by organising events with the assistance of the festival committee. 

It was also great to see people organising their holidays around the time of the festival and to see visitors enjoying themselves in our community. 

The only spoil-sport was the occasional shower but they had a limited effect on a very successful Festival.

Hosted by Deel Rovers Snooker Club a very entertaining night of exhibition snooker was held in Hiney's Upper Deck during the Community Festival. 

The well supported and successful night featured professional snooker player Fergal O'Brien and up and coming local man, Jason Devaney.

On Wednesday afternoon, 22nd of July 2009, The Abbeytown/Abbeyview Resident’s Association merged with Crossmolina AFC to host a Traditional Sports Day and Barbeque within the grounds of the Abbeyview Estate. 

This event was run in conjunction with the Crossmolina Festival and was organised efficiently by both the Residents Association Committee and the Soccer Club Committee, with the support of the Festival Committee. The terrible weather the evening prior to the event meant that setting up for it had to be postponed until the next morning. 

The sun shone positively on the Abbeytown/Abbeyview estate the following morning and preparations for the Sports/Barbeque went into overdrive with everybody involved in high spirits but looking forward anxiously towards the afternoon and praying that the rain kept away.

But we did not have to worry on that score as the sun shone all afternoon. There was a great turnout of adults and children and many participated in the sports which catered for young partakers and ‘not so young’!.  

The BBQ was complimentary and was ecologically and capably run by two well-regarded chefs, one being an All Ireland BBQ chef and with the help of local estate residents. 

The sweet shop, bouncing castles and face painting was also complimentary on the day and local DJ James Carolan provided the music. 

The Abbeytown/Abbeyview Residents Association Committee and the Crossmolina AFC Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank every one who sponsored this event, the Festival Committee for their collaboration, Stewards/Help for their services on the day and all who attended and contributed to this event.  

Everybody, both adults & children, had a magnificent day with music, fun and sports and we are already looking forward to next year!!

Crossmolina Tidy Towns Committee hosted their first Gardeners World on Friday 24th July as part of the Community Festival.

The main street in Crossmolina came alive with stalls, selling or giving away all sorts of items from shrubs to artichokes to bird nesting boxes.

Members of the committee worked very hard erecting the stalls and baking apple tarts, crumbles scones, cakes etc.

The weather was glorious and the event was well attended with lots of tea and coffee served as well as gaelic coffee.

The Committee would like to thank all the people who donated home grown vegetables and the lovely cakes, scones etc.  

A special thank you to James Davis and Mrs Angela Davis for sponsoring all the groceries and allowing us the use of the store and for their kindness. We would also like to thank Social Services for their help.
