Badminton News Letter

Due to great interest this year in badminton our underage singles event was extended to an "A" and "B" section and an extra u10 group was also included. This event is run throughout the year and on a round robin basis thus ensuring all our entrants a max of 4 games each this season. Results are as follows: 

U 9 Group A winner: Kayleigh Coggins, r-up: Aaron Keane, U 9 Group B winner: Dylan Keane, r-up: Patrick Leonard. U10 Group A winner: Josh Moyles, r-up: Jack O'Reilly. 

Group B winner: Esmond Maughan, r-up: Joey Keane. Under 11 Group A winner: 

Aaron Coggins, r-up: Sarah Gough, Group B winner: Ronan Walshe, r-up: Ronan Connor. U13 A winner Diarmuid Coggins, r-up: Jack Loftus, B winner: Matthew Williams, r-up Caolan Foggin. U15 winner Darragh Kelly, r-up Jimmy McAndrew, and in the U17A section winner: Edward Gough, r-up James Gill. U 17 "B" winners: Jimmy McAndrew and joint second on 75 points were Adam Langan and Darragh Kelly. A very lively competition in this section, throwing out some surprises with our new members Jimmy and Adam putting on the pressure!! Heartiest congratulations to everyone and a special thank you to all our coaches, Volunteers and parents without whose assistance we could not continue with such success. A little help can go a long way. And we shall see you all after summer early September God willing. Happy hols to all. Rest relax and recuperate after a very busy Year.

The Late Kathleen Deane

The death occurred peacefully on Saturday 15th April of Kathleen Deane nee Gordan late of Kildaree Crossmolina. Her remains reposed at Leonards Funeral home on Sunday evening. With requiem Mass on Monday in the Church of Our Lady Kilmurray burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Kathleen was predeceased by her son John, husband Jack, is sadly missed by her family, relations, friends, and neighbours. May she rest in peace.

Crossmolina Junior team lost out to neighbours Ballina Stephenites by three points     0 – 10 to 0 – 7 in the County Division 1D League tie in Ballina. The home side had the assistance of the fresh breeze in the opening 30 minuets and lead at the break by 0 – 7 to 0 – 1 with Adrian Kelly the scorer in chief for the Stephenites Thomas McNulty grabbed his sides only first half score. Dean Loftus and Thomas McNulty with four points and sub Michael Gallagher pointed for the visitors but in between Brendan Murray tacked on three points to leave his side comfortable winners in the end

Crossmolina team and scorers John Tolan Cillian This county U16 League tie was a game of two halves with home side Islandeady dominating the opening 30 minuets racing into a 3 – 6 to 0 -4 interval lead thanks to goals from Kevin Hennelly and Eoin Morris with Edward Gough kicking Crossmolina’s four points Conor McNulty bagged two goals and Adam Langan one and suddenly Crossmolina were right back in the game with only a point separating the sides by the 50th minuet. Islandeady introduced a couple of subs and they breathed new life and the scores flowed again with David Moran getting the killer score a gaol and Eoin Morris Cailin Joyce Ethan John Barrett tacked on points. Patrick McAndrew pointed and Edward Gough scored a goal from a penalty to leave the final score 4 – 12 to 4 – 7

Died in London 

The death occurred peacefully on Monday 10th April of Patsy Hanrahan nee Kearns Norwood, South London and formerly of Carrowkilleen Crossmolina. Funeral is taking place in Norwood on Thursday 4th May. Patsy was predeceased by her husband Michael, is survived by her sons James, Paul and Noel, daughter Lorraine, daughters – In – law, son – in – law, Grandchildren, sisters Mollie Gallagher Shanvolahan, Kathleen Byrne, Aughrim Co Wicklow, nieces, nephews, extended family, many friends and neighbours, May she rest in peace. 

FESTIVAL NEWS:

Plans are well underway for Festival 2017 and Crossmolina Festival in conjunction with the Ballina Manor Hotel are pleased to announce International recording artist Sharon Shannon And Her Band in concert as part of this year's festival as part of Sharon's Summer Tour. Sharon has previously toured with Bono, Shane McGowan, Willie Nelson, The Waterboys and many more. Tickets will be on sale shortly. Best of luck to the current Nephin Rose, Laura Judge, who is taking part in the Mayo Rose of Tralee Finals next Saturday night.

The Late Philomena Garrett

The death occurred suddenly and peacefully on Friday 7th April of Philomena Garrett Errew Castlehill Ballina. Her remains reposed at Hiney’s Funeral Home on Sunday evening with removal to St Tiernans Church with burial on Monday in Kilmurray Cemetery after requiem Mass. Philomena daughter of the late Mary and John and sister of the late Josie and Anne Tilcock. Deeply mourned by her loving brother Sean, sisters Theresa (McDonnell, Ballyvicmaha), Mary (Pope, Rugby,England), Kathleen (Leonard, Corballa), Veronica (O'Malley, Coventry), Eileen (Shephard, Rugby, England), Rosaleen (Costello, Tarbert, Kerry), brothers – in - law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. Daffodil Day 

This fundraiser was a great success raising €2,660. We would like to thank the Businesses, who allowed us to collect in their stores, and all the volunteers who collected and the public who contributed so generously

Happy Easter from everyone at the Festival. The Annual Duck Race & The Teddy Bears Daft Raft Race takes place on Easter Sunday after 11:30am Mass, lines are available in local shops for the Duck Race and you can Bet On a Bear in the Daft Raft Race on Easter Sunday right after the Duck Race, try to predict how long it will take the bears to reach the finish line, fun for all the family on Easter Sunday. The dates for the 2017 Community Festival 2017 have been set for July 19th - 23rd

Crossmolina U16 team got their County League campaign off to a winning start with a hard earned 5 – 8 to 2 – 12 win over Bonniconlon at St Tiernans Park Crossmolina. Goals win matches and Crossmolina grabbed four in the opening half from Niall Coggins Conor Caden James Gill and Robert Murphy in between Jack Lawrence grabbed 1 – 1 and James Kelly a point Edward Gough with 4  points and Conor Caden one point had the home side in a comfortable 4 – 5 to 1 – 2 in front at the break. Michael was predeceased by his wife Anne Nee Rowan is survived by his daughters Annette and Aileen, son Michéal, brothers – in -law, sisters - in - law, daughter – in - law, nephews, nieces, relatives, friends and neighbours. May he rest in peace.

Our new beginner Jimmy McAndrew got to the semi final "B" section in U15 and also had a shot at the  U17's, we have to say most improved newcomer this year and Tiocfaidh an la. The Late Josephine Moran 

The death occurred peacefully at Mayo University Hospital Castlebar on Saturday 25th March of Josephine (Josie) Moran Abbeytown Crossmolina. Her remains reposed at Hineys Funeral Home on Tuesday evening with removal to St Tiernans Church. Requiem mass on Wednesday with burial afterwards in Kilmurray Cemetery. Josephine was pre-deceased by her husband Dominic, daughter Margaret Gardiner Rathnamagh, is survived by her Son Michael Kinlough Leitrim, Daughters Ann Goodwin Ballina, Gerldine Boland Coventry, Patricia Cawley Rakestreet, sister Margaret Flannery Beltra Castlebar, brother Padraic Coventry, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sons - in - law, nephews, nieces, relatives, friends and neighbours. May she rest in peace.

We are currently drawing up the Spring /Summer work programme.

 The range of services provided is as follows:

 Painting outside and inside of houses , Maintaining gardens for Seniors-Lawns, hedges, tree trimming ,Replacing light bulbs, alarm batteries etc.

There is a small per hour charge for this service.

Crossmolina Drama Group perform “Mother Knows Best” again - Tribute to the late James Hogan

After three complete sell-out performances in Crossmolina Town Hall with indeed a number of people not being able to gain entry Crossmolina Drama Group are pleased to announce that they are now gearing up for one final performance of Jimmy Keary’s hilarious comedy “Mother Knows Best” which will take place on this Sunday 26th  March at 8pm. This performance will be staged as a tribute to the late James Hogan who was a member of the group and who died suddenly on the 31st of December last. Proceeds from this performance will go towards the purchase of a Defibrillator for Crossmolina Town, fitting tribute to a man who was at the heart of every community endeavour. 

If you were disappointed to miss our last performances or want to support this worthy cause we look forward to seeing you there – Crossmolina Parish Hall on Sunday 26th  March at 8pm.

Jack Leonard Photographic Exhibition 

Which was officially launched on Wednesday evening last in the Jackie Clarke Centre Ballina by Dara Calleary TD. This wonderful photographic exhibition entitled “In my Grandfather’s Time” showcasing the wonderful work of renowned local photographer Jack Leonard who took some outstanding images of the west of Ireland in the early 1900’s. Crossmolina parish was once again shocked and saddened with the news of a fatal car accident in Dallas Texas on Wednesday 1st March  which claimed the life of husband and wife Tina nee Judge formerly of Erris Street Crossmolina and Senan Fitzmartin formerly of Doonbeg Co Clare. Funeral is taking place today Monday in Dallas. The Late Jenny Reape

The death occurred peacefully at Ballina District Hospital on Friday 3rd March of Jenny (Constance) Reape   nee O’Boyle Chapel Rd Crossmolina. Her remains reposed at Hiney’s Funeral Home on Sunday evening with removal to St Tiernans Church burial on Monday in Crossmolina cemetery after requiem mass.  Jenny was pre-deceased by her husband John is survived by her  sons John London, Tony Athlone, Michael Melbourne and Frank Crossmolina, daughter  Maretta Corrigan Bangor Erris daughters – in – law son – in – law,  brother Murd, sister – in – law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives, many friends and neighbours. May she rest in peace.

Jack Leonard Photographic exhibition

The Jackie Clarke Collection hosts a wonderful photographic exhibition entitled “In my Grandfather’s Time” showcasing the wonderful work of renowned local photographer Jack Leonard who took some outstanding images of the west of Ireland in the early 1900’s. The Superb exhibition runs from March 7th – April 8th and will be officially launched on Wednesday 15th at 6:15pm with Dara Calleary TD and Anthony Leonard in attendance. Do call in to see this exhibition. It’s well worth viewing.

Crossmolina Festival Sub-Committee are looking for Stewards (male and female) to help out with the St. Patrick’s Weekend Festival, in particular with the ‘Electric Light Parade’ taking place Friday evening, 17th of March.  There will be a meeting on Tuesday night, 14th of March 2017 at 7:30p.m. in the Enterprise Centre in Crossmolina for anyone interested in being Steward.

 

Lotto Results.

There was no winner of the Crossmolina Deel-Rovers GAA Club Lotto Jackpot on Saturday night 25th February. The numbers were 9 – 13 – 23 – 26 Bernie Gardiner Church St Crossmolina matched three numbers and won €150. The draw took place in Christy’s Bar.This week’s jackpot is €8,100. The Late Henry Ormsby. 

The death occurred peacefully on Sunday 26th February at Abbey Breaffy Nursing Home Castlebar of Henry Ormsby in his 90th Year formerly of Fotish Crossmolina. His remains reposed at Hiney’s Funeral Home on Tuesday evening with removal to St Mary’s church Crossmolina. Funeral Service on Wednesday with burial afterwards in the adjoining Cemetery. Henry was pre-deceased by his sister Elizabeth brother Oliver, is survived by his nephew Cecil Fotish relations, extended family, friends and neighbours. May he rest in peace.

Crossmolina’s new management of Eoin Sweeny and Patrick McAndrew got their first win the this Michael Walsh League cup tie at Tiernans Park on Sunday week with heavy rain before and during the game conditions were not suited the type open football that both sides play Crossmolina got off to a great start with a goal and two points from Brian Benson and Thomas Cafferty point before Claremorris best forward James Shaughnessy  rattled of three points  with Mickie Loftus Mark Leonard and Thomas Cafferty replying with points each. The Late Mattie Merrick 

The Parish of Crossmolina and surrounding area were shocked and sadden when news of the death of Mattie Merrick Ballycorraun in a road accident on the Bellacorick to Castlebar road at Keenagh on Wednesday morning last while on his daily rounds with the post. His remains reposed at his residence on Thursday and at Hineys Funeral Home on Friday evening. Requiem mass on Saturday in St Tiernans  Church with burial after wards in Crossmolina Cemetery Mattie is survived by his wife Catherine, sons Joseph, Kieran and Marty, daughter Katie Brother Paddy London sister Angela Leeds, brothers – in – law, sisters – in – law, nephews, relations, extended family, colleagues in An Post, friends and Neighbours. May he rest in peace

Michael Walsh League 

After a great start in this Michael Walsh League in Hollymount on Sunday week with a goal from Kevin Mulhern, the Home side Hollymount /Carramore came back after a slow start with  four points from Darren Coen. Those were replied with a like similar amount from Cathal Carolan, Dean Loftus, Mickie Loftus and Brian Benson tacked on further points to leave Crossmolina leading at the break by three point’s  1 – 7 to 0 – 7. 

The second half ebbed and flowed with good passages of play and good points taking in particular from Darren Coen who shot five points. Crossmolina’s points came from Kevin Mulhern, Peadar Gardiner, Jason Murphy and two from Brian Benson to leave the final score 0 – 16 to 1 – 12. It was a very entertaining game played in dry conditions on a heavy pitch

St Patricks Festival of Lights

The plans for the Festival of Lights is progressing well with registrations for the parade closed and close to one hundred entries confirmed, which means extra stewards will be required. “Mother Knows Best”

Crossmolina Drama Group perform “Mother Knows Best” again - Tribute to the late James Hogan

After three complete sell-out performances in Crossmolina Town Hall with indeed a number of people not being able to gain entry Crossmolina Drama Group are pleased to announce that they are now gearing up for one final performance of Jimmy Keary’s hilarious comedy “Mother Knows Best” which will take place on Thursday 2nd March at 8pm. This performance will be staged as a tribute to the late James Hogan who was a member of the group and who died suddenly on the 31st of December last. Proceeds from this performance will go towards the purchase of a Defibrillator for Crossmolina Town, fitting tribute to a man who was at the heart of every community endeavour.

If you were disappointed to miss our last performances or want to support this worthy cause we look forward to seeing you there – Crossmolina Town Hall, Thursday 2nd March at 8pm.

The Parish of Crossmolina was shocked and saddened when news filtered through on Sunday morning of the death in a Car Accident of Loretta McKeigue nee Barrett Culnageera Portumna and formerly of Tubbermore. Her remains reposed at her residence on Tuesday evening with removal on Wednesday to St Brigid’s Church Portumna for requiem mass burial afterwards in Churchill Cemetery Loretta is survived by her Husband Eugene family Pamela, John and Eoghan here mother Katie Barrett, grand daughter Kate, sister Bernadette Loughrea, brothers John Dublin and Patrick Rochfordbridge, uncle Thomas Leonard St Mary’s Park extended family relations, friends and neighbours. Mayo Senior Intermediate and Junior Championships were made on Wednesday night last. In the senior Championship Crossmolina were drawn at home to County Champions Castlebar Mitchels in the first round away to Ballina Stephenites in the second round and play Ballinrobe at a neutral venue in the third round. In Junior Championship Crossmolina are away to Kilmeena in the first round at home to Charlestown Sarsfields in the second round and play Ballina Stephenites at a neutral venue in third round

Outdoor AED

Cllr Michael Loftus welcomes installation of the first of it two outdoor AED at the Crossmolina Library. Thanks to the Community/ Firebridage car wash, two AED were purchased by Crossmolina Community Development Council for the town. A course on the use of the AED is been run in the Crossmolina Town Hall on the 26th of February at 2pm by Mayo Civil Defence, so 40 people have signed up.

The death occurred peacefully on Wednesday 25th January of Mary Teresa Munnelly nee Gallagher, Farramorgan Ballina formerly of Dooleeg Crossmolina at her son Muredach’s residence in Meelick Portlaoise. Her remains reposed at her residence with removal to McGowans Funeral Home Ballina with later removal to St Muredach’s Cathedral with burial on Sunday in Leigue Cemetery after requiem mass. Mary Teresa was predeceased by her husband Paddy is survived by her sons Muredach  (Portlaoise), P.J. (Athlone), daughters Marian Mulkerrin (Dublin), Geraldine Molloy (Celbridge) and Joan Parker (Glasson) daughters – in – law, sons – in – law, grandchildren, sister Margaret UK, sisters – in – law, brother – in – law, nephews, nieces, relations, extended family, friends and neighbour’s. Ireland's First St.Patrick's Lights Parade

 

The Lights Parade in Crossmolina on March 17th at 7:30pm will be the first of its kind in Ireland and there will be an information evening on Thurs. Tyrone Guthrie Award

Congratulation to scriptwriter Jennifer Davidson Cabragh House Castlehill who is the recipient of the inaugural Film Mayo Tyrone Guthrie Bursary award. The Bursary was open to filmmakers born in Mayo to enable them to spend two weeks at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerring Co Monaghan. Jennifer is a regular writer for RTE’s Drama series Fair City

Community Bus

The Community Bus is used extensively with two regular routes into Crossmolina every Friday from the Moygownagh and Keenagh areas as well as for regular social outings  both locally and to Fr Peyton Centre, Knock and other venues. This service is used mainly for the elderly of the area but its use is not confined. However the use of the bus is limited by the number of hours the driver can work each week. The Community Council are seeking Voluntary drivers for occasional outings both for the elderly and for other groups/organisations in the area who may need additional transport. If you have a licence to drive a bus with a capacity of 14 people and wish to find out more contact the Crossmolina Community Council offices at 096 30935

The death occurred peacefully on Thursday 22nd December in her 89th year at the Blackrock Nursing Home Foxford of Noreen Loftus nee Lavin The Old Post Office Crossmolina and formerly of Kiltmagh. Her remains reposed at Hiney’s Funeral Home on Thursday evening with removal to St Tiernans church with burial on Friday in Crossmolina Cemetery after requiem Mass Noreen was pre-deceased by her husband Paddy is survived by her family, many friends and very good neighbours. May she rest in peace.

Defibulators

2 Defibulators will be installed shortly in Crossmolina Town.

Training in Defibulator use will be provided by Mayo County Council.
There will be a small charge of €20 each to cover the cost of training.

The training will be provided either in 2 by 2 hour or 1 by 4 hour session, daytime or night time. Training will commence within the next few weeks. To book a place for training and indicate your preferred training option please contact The Enterprise office at 096 30935 & leave a message on the answer machine.

Remember lives have been saved by the use of Defibulators.

Community Services Programme

Under the Community Services programme, Crossmolina Community Development provide a range of Services for Seniors within the Community. We are currently drawing up the Winter work programme.

The range of services provided is as follows:
Painting outside and inside of houses belonging to residents.
Maintaining gardens for elderly-Lawns, hedges, tree cutting etc.
