Lakers put points in the Basket
Crossmolina's Lough Conn Lakers boys played two more exciting and successful matches recently. Firstly, the U-12 boys hosted Castelbar in Deel Rovers GAA Club Sports Hall on November 25th. With a few changes to the team which defeated Ballina a couple of weeks previously, the Lakers boys took an early lead in the opening quarter with scores from Aaron Coggins (free shot), James O'Boyle and Kobe McDonald to Castlebar's solitary score from N. Ryan.
In the second quarter scores from Patrick O'Malley, Dylan Flynn and Darragh Duffy against a solitary basket from B. Gibbons took the local boys to an 11-4 lead at half-time.
In a poor third quarter, the Lakers failed to add any further scores while Castlebar again took a single basket from S. Cunningham.
The final quarter was tense as the Crossmolina boys hung on to their slender lead, which was reduced to a single point as Castlebar took two baskets from B. Kelly and J. Lavin before the Lakers Kobe McDonald stepped in to take the final score and give the local boys a 3-point margin at the final whistle.
All in all, it was a good performance from the local boys against a determined effort from their Castelbar rivals, but some great defending and team-play proved the difference at the end.
Crossmolina: Aaron Coggins (1), Luke Williams, Kobe McDonald (4), Patrick O'Malley (2), Esmond Maughan, Josh Moyles, Dylan Flynn (2), James Loftus, Shane Lynn, James O'Boyle (2) and Darragh Duffy (2)
The Lakers U-14 boys travelled to Belmullet on November 30th, taking on Cispheil Iorrais. As always the Erris boys put up a great effort with neither team managing to put much distance between them and their opponents.
In an even opening quarter, Erris took an early lead with a free shot from Seamus Howard before Crossmolina responded with a basket from Diarmuid Coggins. Erris pushed ahead with a basket from Darren McDonald and the Lakers took two baskets by Eoin Noone before the locals came back with McDonald (basket) and James Lavelle (free shot) to level the scores at the whistle.
Erris took command in the second half with five baskets from Sean Lavelle who played at the high post and under the baskets while Crossmolina responded with five points from Darragh Syron, Diarmuid Fox and Jack Naughton, leaving them five points adrift at half-time.
In a storming third quarter, the Lakers retook the lead scoring ten points to the Erris boy's four. Three baskets from Diarmuid Coggins with two more from Eoin Noone gave the Lakers a single point advantage going into the final period. The locals had baskets from Darren McDonald and Jamie Scott.
The Lakers boys were definitely worth the trip to the Erris capital as a very hard-fought third quarter which saw Darren McDonald fouled-out, left game again tied at 32 points each. Erris had scores from Mark Walshe, Darren McDonald, Anthony Barrett (one basket each) and Sean Lavelle (two baskets and two free shots) while Crossmolina's Eoin O'Boyle (basket), Diarmuid Fox (basket), Diarmuid Coggins (3 free shots) and Darragh Syron (2 baskets) levelled up the scores.
Extra time proved as tense and exciting as the previous four quarters. The Lakers opened the scoring with two free shots from Eoin Noone, but the Erris boys pulled back with a basket from Sean Lavelle.
The action was tense under the boards as the Lakers Eoin O'Boyle contested four rebounds with Sean Lavelle at either end and took two jump balls. The boys from the west went ahead with a basket from Rian Concannon while Crossmolina responded with a solitary point from Diarmuid Coggins.
The Lakers again took the lead with a basket from Eoin O'Boyle and pushed further on when Diarmuid Coggins added what was to be their last score. Erris pulled back with a basket from Brian Concannon and a single point from Anthony Barrett, but time ran out for the Erris boys and Crossmolina took the honours.
It was a great performance from the Lakers boys against a very tough Erris side who were giving nothing away easily. While it is easy to single out the scorers for their victory, it was great defending by all the boys on the court which won the game for Crossmolina. Their team spirit and willingness to cover for each other is evident in the excitement and speed of their games this season and is showing with this second great result.
Crossmolina: Jack Loftus, Darragh Syron (5), Marcus Maughan, Eoin O'Boyle (4), Diarmuid Fox (4), Jack Naughton (2), Jack Sharkey, Diarmuid Coggins (14), Aidan Granaghan, Oliver Maughan, Jack O'Shea, Shane Timmons, Eoin Noone (10).
