Concerned for the futrue development of Crossmolina and its hinterland, after the closure of the Bellacorrick Generating Station in April 2005, and the quality of life the area offers, the Chairman of Crossmolina Community Council, Dr. Mick Loftus and committee members Padraic Mullen, Padraic Langan and Michael Mulhern (snr) attended an information evening in Ferbane, Co. Offaly on November 30th.
Hosted by Mr. James Keane, Manager of the West Offaly Business and Technology Park he outlined to them what was put in place when the Ferbane Power Station closed.
The evening was useful in many repects and at the recent meeting of Crossmolina Community Council members were delighted to learn of the sizeable funds which will be put in place by Government agencies to encourage enterprise development in areas affected by the closure of Bellacorick. Much future discussions will take place on this topic at a later date. Dr. Loftus expressed thanks to Mr. Sean Lowry, Co. Offaly, whom many of you will remember, for having arranged and attending the Ferbane information evening and also to Mr. Eugene Rochford, Crossmolina, for his positive help beforehand.
Other items discussed at the Community Council meeting was the additional Christmas lights jointly purcheased this year by the Traders Association and the Community Council which will enhance our town for the Christmas Season with hopes to extend them further each year from now on. Thanks to Enda, John, and Darragh.
Congratulations were warmly extended to our two local All Star winners James Nallen and Ciaran McDonald whom we are all justifiably proud of here in Crossmolina.

Crossmolina turns green and red for All-Ireland final

As the countdown to Sunday's All-Ireland final gets under way, preparations are well in hand in Crossmolina to mark this auspicious occasion with flags and bunting streaming from all buildings in the town and precincts. The large panes of glass on the right hand side in the Public Library, on Main Street have been transformed with painted images of our three local players, Kieran McDonnald, James Nallen and Peader Gardiner in humorous and victorious poses. Manager John Maughan is seen as flying away with the Sam Maguire Cup! Images of Kerry players in downbeat mood after the final whistle can also be seen! This is the work of Regina Geraghty who works for Mayo Co. Library and is a final year student in Graphic Design at DIT College, Mountjoy Square, Dublin. Much favourable comment has been voiced locally on her interesting and unusual display. On the equally large left-hand side window, colourful drawings by children, students of Renee Cronin, Ballina Street, is displayed also drawing very favourable comment for their great effort. Well worth a look. An interesting selection of books on football and the GAA can also be viewed through the library window having been carefully selected by Librarian Maureen Gallagher. These can be borrowed as usual.
Come win, lose or draw, the great feeling of camaraderie in the parish leading up to the big day itself is to be cherished, and what celebratory days may lie ahead for the Boys/Girls from the County Mayo can only be envisaged.
