Spring’s Arrival St. Brigid’s Day, Candlemas Day, the opening of the salmon — angling season, Ash Wednesday, Shrove Tuesday, St Valentine’s Day all occur in February heralding the beginning of spring. Sometimes the weather does not always reflect the seasons as of old, none the less the lengthening of the evenings, birdsong at early morning, snowdrops/daffodils making their appearance are a promise of lighter days fast approaching now.
St. Brigid, Patroness of Ireland, Feast Day 1st February (today) born approximately in the year 451 was a remarkable woman of the fifth century. Professed a nun in 468 she founded a double monastery, the first of its kind in Ireland at Kildare. Her extraordinary spirituality and compassion was very real.
The opening of the salmon fishing season in the Ballina district also on the 1st February is one of two landmark days in the salmon angling calendar. The other is the closing day, which is the 30th September. Fishing for brown trout begins on the 15th of the month and runs until October 10th. Forty days since Christmas, Candlemas Day on 2nd February, also the Feast Day of our Lord’s Presentation in the Temple, comes with the blessing of holy candles for Church and home use. In the States it is seen as the heart of winter while in most of Europe it is thought a touch of real winter is yet to come if the day itself proves warm and mild.

At the monthly meeting of the Community Council, Chairman, Dr. Mickie Loftus and members present expressed concern that with the recent retirements of Sgt Desmond McGuinn and Garda Michael Benson, Crossmolina would be left without a local resident Sergeant and Garda and and as a result would be dependant on Ballina for assistance. Their concern is to be brought to the attention of the Superintendent in charge for his immediate attention. Tributes were paid to the two Gardai who retired for their courtesy and efficiency during their time in Crossmolina.
Other items on the agenda included the Christmas lights situation in town that came in for lengthly discussion. Plans to have the older lights serviced and checked in time, a booster line installed, extra extensions, with a decided date agreed well in advance for next December turn on should see a remarkable difference. Mr. Michael Loftus (jnr) was thanked for his assistance with the lights on the Bridge, also the ESB for contributing E300. Safe storage space for these lights was also agreed on.
Plans for Broadband continues and a new bus service in the community is due shortly.
Crossmolina Community Council sponsors of the Rural Social Scheme in the parish continue to attract more people, with further places available. The closure of the Bellacorrick Generating Station in April, the resulting unemployment, and the continuing disappointing vacancy at the new factory unit at the Industrial Site on the Ballina Road, despite extensive efforts to bring industry to the area by the Community Council, is proving frustrating. Enterprise units also in need for further plans.
The parish annual magazine "The Chronicle" was complemented on its interesting production and congratulations to all concerned for their fine effort. Work in the Enterprise Centre to comply with fire officer’s report almost completed. This work, plus insurance, rates and water charges, painting, cleaning, heating and other expenses requires good housekeeping to maintain. A much praised Christmas Dinner in the Dolphin Hotel for the few members organised by Breda, and a special congratulations by all to Chairman Dr. Mick Loftus who was declared a World Record Holder in late December for his Gold Medal Run in the 3000 metres race in the 75-79 age group in Utah, USA last Autumn concluded the meeting.
