A Taste of Sailing on Clew Bay Open to All
By Alex & Daria Blackwell
If you like the idea of sailing but don’t know where to start, Mayo Sailing Club’s Taste of Sailing introductory sailing lessons for adults may be just the answer.
Here is an opportunity to try out the exciting sport of sailing while making new friends. It’s not as complicated as it looks. No prior experience or knowledge is required. You don’t even need a boat. All you need is a life jacket to get started.
Experienced, friendly skippers will go over the basics in a classroom session, take you out for a spin on their comfortable cruising sailboats, give you a few quick lessons, and let you decide if sailing is for you. You can sit back and enjoy a leisurely sail or take the helm and feel what it’s like to skipper the boat. It’s up to you. This course will provide you with a flavour of the sport in a stress-free, controlled and safe environment.
The introductory course will begin on Tuesday the 10th of April 2012 at 6.30pm at the clubhouse in Rosmoney on Clew Bay and continue on for three consecutive Tuesday evenings.
The first evening is land based at the clubhouse with picturesque views over the harbour and runs through general on-the-water skills and safety procedures, an overview of basic sailing techniques, and information on Mayo Sailing Club. The remaining evenings are water based. Participants will be brought out to sail on club members’ boats in the shadow of Croagh Patrick on spectacular Clew Bay. At the end of the four weeks, participants can get advice on how to continue sailing.
There are plenty of opportunities for everyone. Sailors with boats need crew. Volunteer and you may get a chance to go out racing or cruising without ever needing to buy a boat. It is a wonderful way to learn all about sailing while developing your skills as a part of a well honed team. All you need is your enthusiasm to start.
There are many different ways to experience sailing. With Ireland surrounded by the sea, it’s natural for us to wonder what it’s like to be out there sailing the oceans all around us. We see boats sailing off into the sunset and wonder where they are off to. Perhaps some exotic port? That’s what dreams are made of.
So dream on, but do something about it. Give yourself an uplifting new experience this year.
Sign up for Taste of Sailing while space is available. For more information, please contact John Wallace on 087 2581369 or visit www.mayosailingclub.com. The course costs €150 for the 4 sessions which can be applied towards membership in Mayo Sailing Club (MSC) should you decide to join as a full member.
See you on the water!
