Community Development Plan - Update - 19-08-2009 11:09 The recent developments in Crossmolina and the surrounding area, as outlined below, has come through the Crossmolina Area Development Plan. The plan was commissioned by the Crossmolina Community Council in 2006. The Development Plan evolved following consultation with local people and businesses and aims to provide a catalyst for positive change for the town and local area.

The Plan focuses on:
• Developing tourism and increasing recreational activities, particularly local walks
• Promoting local heritage
• Care for an increasing number of elderly residents in the catchment area
• Community Services, which support people with special needs

In 2007 the Crossmolina Community Council applied for and was funded for a number of employees under the Pobal Community Services programme. The Community Services programme is one of a number of programmes managed by Pobal on behalf of the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.

Ongoing Projects

• Town Land Signage

To date over 20 Town land signs have been put in place in the vicinity of Crossmolina. It is hoped to extent the programme further into the parish as funding becomes available. The Town land signs in place were funded under the Clar Bi-lingual Signage scheme 2008.

• Identifying and signposting Loop walks in the vicinity of the town

To date five walking routes have been identified and signposted in the vicinity of Crossmolina. These walks are Gortnor Abbey, Wilsons Lane, Grange, Deelcastle and Enniscoe.

The first four walks were developed with tourism in mind but also for the benefit of the local community. Some of the walks are accessible to persons with disabilities and are sensitive to the requirements of older people as they have adequate and regular rest areas. These walks were identified in conjunction with Walks Officer, Anna Connor from Mayo County Council. Anna also arranged the supply of a Map board, posts and direction arrows.

The walks are extensively used by locals, visitors and tourists to the area.

The fifth walk through the grounds of Enniscoe House is a Failte Ireland recognised loop walk. Permission to develop the walk was very kindly given by Susan Kellett, owner of Enniscoe House. Her permission and ongoing input into this walk is very much appreciated by all the community in Crossmolina.

A brochure detailing the Crossmolina and Enniscoe Loop walks has been prepared and printed by the Mayo County Development Board.

Thanks to Anna Connor, Mayo County Councils Walks Officer for her assistance, guidance and advice throughout the mapping and development of these walks.

It is hoped to develop at least three more walks this year. These walks combined with the Kenagh Loop walk will give a great variety of walks in terms of landscape, terrain and relative difficulty.

• Industrial Units

Planning permission is in place for the erection of Industrial units and Tenders for the erection will issue shortly

• Sheltered Housing

Another project is the development of a sheltered housing complex to house all facilities for the elderly. Talks are ongoing and the Community Council are confident that an identified site will be made available in the near future.

Community Services for the Elderly

Another important part of the Community Services programme is Community Services for the elderly.
The Community Services programme staff are actively involved in the following activities in the Crossmolina area.

• Conducting a survey to establish the needs of the elderly.

This ongoing survey is being carried out by Community Services programme employees in conjunction with the Primary Care Team.

• Designed, compiled and distributed a laminated sheet with key contact numbers

• Distribute Mass bulletins to the house bound

• Carry out minor repairs as well as lawn and hedge maintenance

• Paint walls and maintain flower beds in front of houses in Abbey Town

• Install smoke alarms in houses. Smoke alarms were supplied by Mayo County Council

• Assist with the daily preparation of meals for the elderly

• Organise outings for the elderly. This service is now expanded to include ALL elderly people in the area including those who are not regular users of the bus service

• Working with the staff and residents of Clunin, the day care centre for adults with special needs.

If you are interested in availing of any of the services outlined above or wish to get further information call into the Community Services programme office at the rear of the Library or contact the office at 096 30935.
