Hope to meet Cawleys - 03-05-2008 18:28 I will be in Crossmolina and Belmullet May 11-13 and hope to find Cawleys - especially any who may be descendents of Charles Cawley who was a blacksmith in Crossmolina in the mid 1800's. His wife was Kathleen and they had children named Anne, Maureen, Chris, Cahal, Sean, Patrick, Helen and Margaret. That's all I know of the Crossmolina Cawleys from my family.

Also, descendents of Charles' brother John Cawley (my great grandfather) who moved to Binghamstown, married Mary Cooney, who died quite young after having children Bridget, Michael and Mary - and then John married Margaret O'Donnell. John and Margaret had children Mary, John, Edward, Charles, Anthony, William (my grandfather) Margaret and Nora.

My grandfather's brothers John and Charlie stayed in Binghamstown and most or all of the others moved away.
John married Sabina Kennedy and had children John, William, Maggie, Michael, Sheila, Anthony and James. Any of these people still alive would likely be in their 70's or 80's, but may have children in the area?

Anyway, my friend and I will be staying at Bru Chlann Lir on the Mullet peninsula - please leave word at the desk for us (May 11-13) if any of this sounds familiar and you'd like to meet us! I'd sure love to meet you!

Re:Hope to meet Cawleys - 13-05-2008 20:11 Hello Sheila,

Iam the grandson of your grandfather's brother John.
I was in Mayo myself last week staying on the west coast at Westport. There are no Cawleys left now in Binghamstown.
The last one was my uncle John who died in 1991. The derelict bungalow opposite the Golf Links tavern was the family home. It was sold off when John died.
William is still alive and living in Melbourne Australia.
My father was Michael who died in 1966. Ther are four sons myself and Tony living in Leicester England, Chris in New Zealand and Gary in France.
You would seem to have greater knowledge of the family history than we do. We supposed that the family move from Crossmolina when the Binghams were setting up a new town on the Mullet in the 19th century. There would appear to be a history of blacksmiths in the family as our great gandfather is listed in the 1901 census as such.
There was a blacksmith in Belmullet in 1918 Charles Cawley who was the quartermaster of the Irish Volunteers. I believe him to be our great uncle.
My grandparents John and Sabina together with uncles John, Anthony and Charles are all buried in the cemtery at Binghamstown.
Hope you enjoyed your time on the Mullet. sorry that there are no Cawleys there now.

John Cawley

Thanks so much for responding. I wish our paths had crossed -I would certainly have enjoyed meeting you.
We travelled from Dublin to Galway, then past Tourmakeady (my grandmother's birthplace) to Westport and then on up to the Mullet. (Wouldn't it be odd if we were in Westport on the same day?) We also spent a day wandering Crossmolina and went down to the heritage center and to Lahardaun where our story seems to have started. (At least as far back as we've been able to track).
Due to a series of serendipitous coincidences, we ended up staying at a B&B neighboring the current owner of your grandparents home. We got permission to wander about and take pictures. We stopped at the pub and met someone who knew great-uncle Charlie (you are correct in your identification of him). Also when we visited the cemetery, we met another local man who knew Charlie and your grandparents as well. Everyone who remembered them seemed to be fond of the Cawleys and had very nice things to say.
My grandfather William died in 1969 in Tampa, Florida. He had 5 children: William (my dad), John, Larry, Sheila & Mary Therese. John and Sheila are still alive and living in the USA.
My dad, who passed away in 2002, also had 5 children: William (we call him by his middle name Kevin to avoid confusion), Tom, Rosanne, myself and Regina. My oldest brother's son is also named William (keeping in the family tradition) but called Liam.
I have three sons: Nathaniel, Jeremy and Joshua and there are a great number of other descendants in the USA.
My dad did a lot of research prior to his passing on the family history. I did discover when I visited the Mayo Heritage people that my identification of Charlie who moved to Crossmolina was in error - there were in fact two Charlie Cawleys that moved there about the same time, and ours is the other one.
I'd very much like to stay in contact with you - and perhaps cross paths someday. We took many photos you might enjoy. Please write me at cawley.sm@gmail.com if you would like this as well. In any case - thanks for posting. It was a wonderful adventure.

Re:Hope to meet Cawleys - 06-07-2008 03:16 Just read your message. I have done a lot of work on the Cawley, including photos of grave stones on the Peninsula.
Perhaps we could match up our information. Some of your information identifies the wrong Cawley. Sorry I missed you earlier.
