Lakers Basketball
Mixed luck for Lakers boys Crossmolina’s Lough Conn Lakers travelled to Kiltimagh just before Christmas for three basketball matches with mixed results. On Wednesday, 20th, the U-11 and U-12 boys were in action.
Getting the U-11s off with a flying start, baskets from Darragh Duffy and Luke Williams, who then added two free shots, before Kiltimagh scored their only basket of the first quarter, left the Lakers 6-2 up after the first period.
Kiltimagh scored the first basket of the second quarter but Gary Naughton and Jack O’Reilly responded for Crossmolina to extend the lead further by half time (10-4).
After the play resumed, Tom Gough and Ronan Sweeney took further baskets for the Lakers but Kiltimagh responded with a basket and a free shot before Darragh Duffy took the final basket of the third quarter, Crossmolina leading by 16 points to 7.
Kiltimagh took the initiative in the final quarter, pulling back four points but Luke Williams finished the game with another two-pointer for the Lakers (18-11).
Overall, it was a great display from the Crossmolina boys who handled the game well and never looked to be under too much pressure from a determined Kiltimagh side who made them work hard for every score.
Crossmolina: Luke Williams (6), Jack O’Reilly (2), Tom Gough (2), Ronan Sweeney (2), Josh Moyles, Fionn Cosgrove, Darragh Duffy (4), and Gary Naughton (2).
The Lakers U-12s had a much tougher and low-scoring game in St. Louis gym. They never fully recovered after a disappointing first quarter, which left them four points down, James O’Boyle being the only Crossmolina scorer to the Giants three baskets (2-6).
With a basket from Patrick O’Malley in the second quarter matched by one from the Kiltimagh boys, the Lakers carried the 4 points decefit into the second half.
Kobe McDonald took the only score for the Lakers in the third quarter as Kiltimagh matched them with a single basket.
The last quarter was a real battle, the Lakers boys giving it their all, and dragging themselves back into contention. With less than a minute left to play, the Lakers were one point adrift with baskets from Ronan Walsh and Patrick O’Malley compared with a single point from the Giants. However the last score of the battle went to the home-side who emerged 3-point victors.
Again, it was a real battling display from both sides and there was never a great deal of space between the teams.
Crossmolina: Shane Lynn, Tom Gough, Aaron Coggins, Oisin Deane, Kobe McDonald (2), Patrick O’Malley (4), Ronan Walsh (2), Josh Moyles, Dylan Flynn, Darragh Duffy and James O’Boyle (2).
The following evening, Thursday 21st, the Lakers U-14 boys travelled to St. Louis in Kiltimagh for a vital league match. After two great victories against Ballina and Belmullet (both in overtime) the lads were determined to finish before the Christmas with another win.
It was the Giants who got off to a blistering start with two baskets before the Lakers responded with two free shots from Eoin O’Boyle. Diarmuid Coggins followed these up with a basket and a free shot to push the Lakers into the lead while Eoin Noone joined the party with a basket and two free shots. Kiltimagh kept pace with a basket but were three points adrift at the end of the first quarter.
Chasing the game, the Giants put in five points before the break while the Lakers boys kept just in front with three points from Darragh Syron, keeping them a single point ahead at half-time.
The Crossmolina boys took control of the third quarter with two baskets from Darragh Syron and another from Shane Timmons and closed out the period with two more baskets from Eoin Noone against two baskets from the Kiltimagh boys.
In the closing period, baskets from Eoin Noone, Diarmuid Fox and Darragh Syron with a single free shot from Eoin Noone ensured the Kiltimagh boys would not catch up. The Giants scored two baskets in the closing quarter but it was not enough.
Overall, it was a good hard-fought game from a Lakers point of view. The last quarter lead gave the coaches a chance to play some extra players and share the court-time around a little. This gives the Lakers U-14 three wins and no losses before the holidays, a real incentive to bring on their game in the New Year.
Crossmolina: Eoin O’Boyle (2), Jack Loftus, Darragh Syron (9), Marcus Maughan, Diarmuid Fox (2), Jack Naughton, Max O’Boyle, Diarmuid Coggins (3), Aidan Granaghan, Shane Timmons (2) and Eoin Noone (11).
